What’s The Difference Between Retrofit Windows And New-Construction Windows

window replacement removing new construction windows

In terms of the age of the building in which the window replacement Denver homes go through, windows can be grouped into two categories: retrofit windows are units installed on existing buildings, to replace existing windows, while new-construction windows are units installed during the construction of new buildings. The two classes are different not only in terms of the buildings they are used in – here are some further features that distinguish them:

  • The frame – retrofit windows are installed in existing frames, while new-construction windows come complete with the frame and the operating mechanism;
  • The price – retrofit windows are usually much more affordable than the units destined to be used on new buildings;
  • Installation – retrofit windows being inserted into existing frames, they are quicker, easier and cheaper to install than new windows. However, the frames on old buildings might not be perfectly square, which might cause problems while installing retrofit windows;
  • Usage – while retrofit windows can only go into existing frames, therefore they can only be used on finished buildings, new-construction windows can be used on old buildings as well as to replace old windows. In the latter case, the old window frame is removed and the new window is installed into the clean, new, usually larger opening.
