The truth is that there are not many things you can do to increase the amount of sunlight that enters the house. Most of the time, renovation works are needed – structural and, sometimes, major. But there are a few small things you can do to maximize sunlight coming through your windows.
Mirrors. You can put a mirror on a wall next to a window, or opposite a window. When placed adjacent, a mirror mimics the window and makes it look like there are several windows in the room. On the opposite wall, a mirror will reflect the light coming from the window.
Allow the light penetrate inside. Avoid blocking the natural light that enters through the windows with any piece of furniture or thick curtains. Opt for light colors for your indoor design, which allows light to "dress" the space. This will make even the shadows brighter.
The ceilings should be a little lighter in color than the walls, because this way, the room will feel less cramped. A reflective, glossy or semi-gloss paint is a good choice to reflect light.
Use metallic accents. Just as the white color reflects light, so do metallic materials. At least in the kitchen, it is quite simple to incorporate metallic decorative elements or even to dress the island in metal. Think about a Denver window replacement project to help bring in more light too.
